who needs cereal when there's Amsoy for breakfast

Believe it or not, in many different cultures, its common to eat, what we here in America consider to be, lunch or dinner food for breakfast (aside from cold pizza of course). While I studied abroad in college, my host family introduced me to Amsoy (so I have them to thank for the inspiration of this wonderful blog). At least once a week, we would eat rice with pickled amsoy and dried pork. I thought for sure I would never get used to eating such a hearty meal for breakfast, but to my surprise, I now don't mind pushing aside the cereal bowl to partake of now what is one of the most memory and flavor packed dishes I'll ever eat.

that one time my DAD ate amsoy

My pops enjoys the simple things in life, from clothing to food. He even insists that the different foods on his place do not touch. So naturally when I first started talking about amsoy, he was a true skeptic. It took me weeks to convince him to come over when I was cooking with it, and even then I had to tempt him with the option of his favorite dessert. But man! As soon as he tasted it, he hasn't stopped raving about it since! My mom is now even annoyed by the fact that all he ever wants her to cook is Steak and Amsoy. Ha! Sorry mom!

duck hunting

One fall, my pops and I couldn't stop talking about eating duck. But not just any duck--he wanted to catch it himself! So out we went (I had to go along, of course) with one of my dad's good friends Mark who decided to take a chance on us newbie hunters. We sat for hours in the cold, wet marsh, shivering and talking about politics and food. I was telling them that I couldn't wait to get home and whip up that duck with - you guessed it - Amsoy. We were out there all day and only caught three birds. Although really, we only came home with two...*sigh*... As we were riding back to shore in Mark's boat, my dad accidentally dropped one of the birds in the river! At least we had two left to cook. When we got back, my dad prepped and roasted the ducks and I did what I do best, sautéed some Amsoy, and mashed some potatoes to go along with it too. It was a great ending to a great day.
